Block Printed Cotton Bag

Block Printing
Block Printing is an ancient Indian printing technique design, used widely throughout history around the world to print our own fabric and papers. It involves covering the block with the design in ink or dye, and stamping it onto the fabric or paper.
Images that are printed with this technique are typically much bolder than other types of printmaking: since the blocks are generally carved by hand, there is often less detail and add more texture to the prints.
Blocks can be made of wood, linoleum, rubber, or other materials; though wooden blocks are most popular.
For Block Printing on fabric and canvas, Acrylic and fabric colors are preferred.

You will need
Wooden Blocks
Sponge
Acrylic Colors

To Print:
1. To ensure symmetry of design, put craft tape on the fabric which will work as a scale guide helping you to locate the exact spots on the fabric to put the block.

2.  Squeeze a small amount of ink and spread it on a sponge. This will get you a thin, even layer.

3.  Press the block on to the sponge repeatedly, making sure there is a thin, even layer of the color on the whole design of the block.

4. Take the block and press it down onto the fabric. You can do this with your hands or whatever it takes to apply even pressure. The most important part is applying the pressure evenly, since the color will be stronger in some areas of the print than others if uneven pressure is applied. This step requires some practice.

5. Leave for 1 hour for drying

Block printing is an excellent way to produce a something that is truly handmade, but can be very easily replicated. Here is an example.

The technique offers huge possibilities of match and mix of different block designs in various colors on the same fabric.
